Clenching and Grinding your Teeth
Do you suffer with headaches, face aches or sore jaw joints?
Are your teeth wearing down or chipped and broken?
These are all signs that you could be clenching or grinding your teeth. Our teeth are only designed to touch lightly when we swallow, approximately 10 minutes per day. Say you clench or grind your teeth for just one hour a day this is 6 times more than what you are supposed to. Worse is the force applied to the joints and muscles when you do this is 10 -16 times the force compared to when you swallow.
Put another way if you were used to walking 1 mile a day this would be like sprinting 6 miles a day. Perhaps no surprise that teeth will break, joints and muscles and heads will start to hurt, or teeth will wear down quicker than normal.
You may not even be aware that you clench and grind your teeth, as it is very common to do this at night time. The proper name for clenching and grinding your teeth is Bruxing.
At Smile Style Dental Care Centre we have an understanding of how this occurs and have helped may people with what is a common problem. Treatment always follows correct diagnosis and therefore the first step to treating these problems is a thorough examination which is always where we start to help our clients.
